Liverpool appears to have the squad depth to last the pace in the Premier League title race. Jurgen Klopp's rebuild after an offseason overhaul could hardly be going any better, with Liverpool on top of the league, looking well set to reach the English League Cup final, and still in the FA Cup and Europa League. But the biggest drama arrived when West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola came out to punch clear a cross, only to make contact with McBurnie. West Ham twice went ahead at Bramall Lane, first through Maxwel Cornet in the 28th and then James Ward-Prowse from the penalty spot in the 79th. Ben Brereton Diaz, on loan from Villarreal, scored Sheffield United's initial equalizer on his Premier League debut.

LONDON (AP) — On a day when English soccer mourned the passing of Bobby Charlton, Manchester City and Liverpool got back on track with wins in the Premier League. City and Liverpool bounced back from two straight disappointing results with comfortable wins to reignite a title rivalry that is showing signs of once again going deep into the season. Julian Alvarez and Erling Haaland netted for City in the opening 20 minutes, with the Norway striker ending a mini-drought after going two league games without scoring. He has never gone three Premier League games without a goal since joining City last season. City has 21 points from nine games, one more point than Liverpool.

Liverpool's Konate, Thiago out for Villa match - Klopp

Sept 1 (Reuters) - Liverpool's Ibrahima Konate and Thiago will miss this weekend's Premier League game at home to Aston Villa due to injuries, manager Juergen Klopp said, while giving little away on the club's possible transfer activity on Friday's deadline day. France centre back Konate is battling a muscle issue and missed last weekend's comeback win over Newcastle United, while Brazil midfielder Thiago underwent hip surgery before the start of the season and has suffered a setback in his recovery. "Ibou (Konate) will not be ready for the game," Klopp said. Thiago started training with the team and then had a little setback, so we have to slow down there a little bit. Liverpool are third in the league with seven points from three games, one point above Villa in seventh place.

Salah not for sale, says Liverpool boss Klopp

Aug 25 (Reuters) - Mohamed Salah is not for sale and Liverpool have not received any offer from Saudi Arabian club Al-Ittihad, manager Juergen Klopp said on Friday. Salah has scored 187 goals in 307 appearances since joining Liverpool in 2017, helping the club win the Premier League and Champions League. The German also said that 31-year-old Salah, who signed a three-year extension to his contract last year, is 100% committed to Liverpool. Mac Allister is now available for the game at Newcastle where Klopp will face Eddie Howe. Centre back Ibrahima Konate is struggling with a muscle injury, and he is a doubt for the Newcastle game.

LIVERPOOL, April 9 (Reuters) - Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp was left at a loss to explain how his side did not complete a comeback win against Arsenal in what he described as a 'spectacular' game at Anfield on Sunday. An open game, completely open, they score with the first situation and the second one," Klopp said. "It was a spectacular game in the end. The draw left Liverpool down in eighth spot, a massive 29 points behind leaders Arsenal, although Klopp's side may just have opened the door for champions Manchester City. Arsenal lead City by six points but have played a game more and must also visit the Etihad Stadium.
Still, the mood in the dressing room after Sunday's edge-of-seat drama was about two points lost than the one salvaged, manager Mikel Arteta said. "Super intense match," Arteta said. "We relied on big defensive moments where Aaron took a big part," Arteta said. Arsenal's lead was cut to six points, with City having a game in hand. The result set up what should be a thrilling match between the two at City's Etihad home on April 26.
Arsenal denied huge win as Liverpool hit back to draw

LIVERPOOL, England, April 9 (Reuters) - Arsenal's grip on the Premier League title race was loosened as Liverpool produced a storming comeback to snatch a 2-2 draw in super-charged clash at a raucous Anfield on Sunday. The north Londoners were heading for a first league win at Liverpool since 2012, an eighth successive league win and a massive three points in their quest to win the league as they powered into a 2-0 lead. Arsenal have 73 points from 30 games, while Liverpool are eighth with 44 points. The game was under control but after that we concede a really sloppy goal and the game shifted momentum," Arsenal manager Arteta said. Liverpool took charge after the break and were awarded a penalty in the 58th minute after Rob Holding fouled Jota.
Mbappe looking to reach new heights with ambitious France

DUBLIN, March 26 (Reuters) - Kylian Mbappe's rise continued as France started their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign with a 4-0 win against the Netherlands and the forward will be looking to reach new heights as Les Bleus face Ireland away in Group B on Monday. Mbappe has scored 38 goals for France and sits in fifth place overall in the list of the country's top scorers, three shy of former great Michel Platini and 15 behind all-time leader Olivier Giroud. Mbappe netted a double at the Stade de France last Friday as France crushed the Netherlands in seemingly casual, yet brutal fashion. "We want to show we can be a great team, that's the identity of this generation - this desire for greatness, a lot of players have that," said the 24-year-old Mbappe. To do that, France will rely on their pair of centre backs after Dayot Upamecano and Ibrahima Konate proved unbreakable last Friday.
Mbappe also set up Antoine Griezmann for the opening goal, soothing the Atletico Madrid player's disappointment after he was only named vice-captain. Eduardo Camavinga added: "His attitude hasn't changed, he's still the same, we're very happy that he scored that double. Deschamps wasted no time in installing Konate and Upamecano, 23 and 24 respectively, in central defence. France next face Ireland in Dublin on Monday. French hearts are broken but future looks bright

Mbappe, who turns 24 on Tuesday, netted all three French goals, taking his tally from two World Cups to 12. "Potentially, this France team has an important reservoir of talents," said Deschamps. "We'll always need experienced team leaders to groom the young players but the reservoir is big." "Some players have been in the Euro 2016 final, won the 2018 World Cup, they bring their experience. "We have to keep this France team at this level, with the best players on the world and European stage."
France on a tightrope as knockout phase looms

Until then, with Deschamps having made nine changes to the team who secured their spot in the knockout phase with a 2-1 win against Denmark, France looked clueless and were overwhelmed in the midfield. LACK OF 'COLLECTIVE EXPERIENCE'"I know I haven't put them in the best conditions with all these changes because they don't have a collective experience," said Deschamps. The Liverpool centre back appeared a level above all his team mates, especially Varane, and it is a safe bet to say that Deschamps might consider fielding him from the start alongside Dayot Upamecano. "Another tournament is starting now," said Deschamps - which may come as a relief to France watchers after Wednesday's performance. France's Deschamps says he has replacements ready for Kimpembe
  + stars: | 2022-11-14 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
Borussia Moenchengladbach striker Marcus Thuram and AS Monaco defender Axel Disasi were called up as Deschamps completed his squad, the French federation said on Monday. Disasi made the final cut after Kimpembe ruled himself out because of a hamstring injury. "Kimpembe did not have all the elements to be ready," Deschamps told reporters on Monday. Asked about his options to replace Kimpembe, the France coach added: "Konate and Upamecano. Deschamps also said 29-year-old Manchester United centre back Raphael Varane, who has been included in the squad despite being injured in October, was making good progress.
CNN —‘Tis the season for wall charts and fans gathering around to pick their starting teams for the 2022 Qatar World Cup. “It’s always difficult when a guy helps you get to the World Cup, he scores three goals in World Cup qualifying and isn’t going to be a part of the program. Again, it’s more about who we did add that we felt good about.”All but one of the 26 will be making their World Cup debut at this year’s tournament and, according to the USMNT, it will be the youngest team to qualify for the World Cup.
